• Course Description (AA2 F97): Advanced Art 2 (AA2) is the third course in the drawing and painting art sequence, and follows Advanced Art 1 (AA1). Like AA1, this course is also designed to develop and strengthen observational drawing skills and visual problem-solving skills through the creation and analysis of artwork. AA2 is treated as pre-AP. Strong emphasis is placed on the creation of AP Breadth section portfolio pieces in the first half of the course, and in the second half students are introduced to the creation of self-directed, self-initiated, independent work, through the execution and development of mini-concentrations. By working in series, students begin to develop personal statements in their work and become better prepared for both the Concentration section of the AP Portfolio, as well as the art-making process after high school. At the end of the course, AA2 juniors are given projects to complete over the summer that are required for the successful completion of the AP course in senior year.

    Expectations:  Students are expected to attend all classes on time, and be ready when the bell rings. Students need to complete all assignments on time to receive full credit, including homework. Late work is deducted 5 points per day. If extenuating circumstances arise, it is the student’s responsibility to communicate with the instructor so that accommodations can be made. Ultimately, the amount of time and energy put into the course is directly related to the degree of success.

    Assessment:  Students are given grades for quizzes, homework, class projects, and sketchbook work. Evaluation is ongoing, and often occurs during projects, not just at the end. Feedback from the instructor and classmates (often in the form of a group critique) is provided regularly. Like any other subject, feedback is used to help students get better, recognize progress, determine areas for improvement, and learn how to critically observe and speak about artwork.

    Sketchbook Journal:  Sketchbooks should be nearby everyday for note taking and class work. Ideally, sketchbooks are  8½ x 11 or 9x12, spiral bound (no taped bindings), and can be found in most grocery stores, as well as office supply stores and online. Feel free to alter the cover and make it your own. (If we return, names need to be on the back surface in marker, large.)
     
     
    The below materials are not required during Fall 2020 Remote Teaching: 
     
    Folder or Binder:  Students should keep all handouts organized and in order. Feel free to get creative with this (but be diligent about keeping your sketchbook workable and organized). Students may also include a section for Advanced Art 2 in one large binder with other subjects if this system works better for them. 
     
    23" x 31" Portfolio:  Students will need a flat portfolio to keep their work in (last year's portfolio will work fine). Handmade portfolios are also welcome and encouraged. Please no zipper portfolios (we do not have the space and can only accommodate these for seniors in AP Art).
