The reality of our current technology use in schools is that, since Covid (2020) and even before, the main use of communication with my students has been through Google Classroom.  This Webpage has become a "quiet" place for updated information. If you find anything lacking, please email me.  The long train of scrollable information below is a history of my entries on this webpage over the years from before Google Classroom.

Note to Mr Herman's Students and Parent/Guardians 4/1/20

    To All Students and Parents

Wappingers students will start “continuity of learning” on Friday 4/3.  The biggest thing to know is that everything that will be happening is new to everybody, and we will be experimenting with different learning platforms.  I would like to think that since we have been using Google Classroom for the entire year as a method of communicating assignments, tests, due dates, submissions, and such other important class related things, that we should be able to continue in our classes without much difficulty.  I will continue using Google Classroom as a means of communicating and giving out information, and I am not worried about the learning curve associated with Google Classroom itself. Every single student in my classes has a Google Classroom connection. If the availability of internet or device access at home is an issue, please email me as soon as possible.

    To Parents

There is an option that I see as a teacher in each Google Classroom that allows me to invite Student Guardians to the classroom. As always, you have had the chance to be included.  A number of parents and guardians already have chosen to do this and receive summaries of their students’ class activities. This is obviously a different time, and if you are now interested in “staying tuned” to your students’ activities, PLEASE EMAIL THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE INCLUDED.

    My email is thaddeus.herman@wcsdny.org

Something that I run into as a "Teacher" in Google Classroom is that I don't see what you the "Student" or "Guardian" might see. Here was a helpful video meant for what Guardians can expect from Google Classroom.

    Student Grades

At this point, there are a lot of questions centered about grades, and how it works from here.  This is a significant part of the students evaluation by others outside of class (parents and prospective colleges) and there is always a district policy that we teachers work under in determining our grading scheme.  As of this writing, there is a lot of discussion at the district level about how grading will work in this new environment.

I will continue grading online assignments as I always have. And since most in-class assignments are usually graded for completion, I will continue to do that as well.  The nature of testing is still a big question. I will be creating testing tools through Google Forms, but I am not sure how these evaluations will play out in a grading scheme. More to come on that issue.

    Individual Classes

I teach three very different classes, so I will just include a quick summary of my intentions for each in the following few paragraphs.  More details will come up in the Google Classroom stream itself.

    Astronomy-

There is a freedom in this class that will work well here.  Though there is a general direction of material that we follow through, there is also the long list of new things that crop up through what we have already been doing all year with Student Research Reviews.  I often take the topics that you find in Astronomy in doing your SRR and turn them into mini-lessons. We will continue to do that.

We also were just in the process of starting our 3rd Quarter Project - Good Astronomy Video search.  By Friday, I will have this project fully modified and ready for you. We have watched a lot of short videos over the course of the year, and this project may become our main backbone for interesting new source material for our exploration. Keep the SRR’s coming.  I will adjust the due date in Classroom.

    Physics-

My main goal is to expect that the Regents exam is still happening in June and that I would like you to be ready for it.  Obviously, we are currently living in a world of constantly changing directives, and my goal may have to change with the times, but my main goal stands for now.

The general nature of our class is only a little lecture and a lot of practice of topics and problems.  We have used Self Graded Google Forms to track points of difficulty during each topic. Exactly how I present the new material is something that will evolve over the coming weeks, but I think the Self Grading Google Forms will be the place of familiarity.  I want to concentrate on new topics, but we also still are in the middle of Retro tests. Expect to see continued review along the topics of PVA graphs, SAWITEASWU, Projectiles, and FBD/Friction problems.

    Principles of Engineering-

This is a tough one...We were on the edge of our big unit (6-8 weeks)  on Control Systems. We were going to learn about computing coding and building “robotic” devices like Sparky (who you were introduced to right near the end).

One thing about PLTW courses is the amount of online resources they have.  We all have access to MyPLTW Course material. Since I am an old “horse” at teaching POE, I tend to go in my own direction regarding the material, and frequently ignore the MyPLTW platform.  This will change in that we will be exploring the remaining topics not covered and utilizing the MyPLTW material with assessments on Google Classroom.

     COVID 19 2-Week Break March 16th -March 30th

If you read down this page you will see that I have switched most of my electronic communication of class information to Google Classroom.  All current students are currently signed into the appropriate Google Classroom and should, therefore, have access to any class material presented.

Parents and Gaurdians are always able to see their student's assignments through Google Classroom.  All that has to be done is to be invited.  So, if interested, please send me an email with your student's name and I will use the email address to send an invitation.

There are always things to learn, whether in school or in the Cloud!

    Name:  Mr. Tad Herman

Welcome Back to Sept 2019!...and heading towards 2020.

OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, I have been using Google Classroom for most of my web related information and communication. So, there will be few updated to this webpage.

You will be getting access to the Google Class on the first day of class.

However, you can take a look here for starters.

Syllabuses are accessible in the left column.

I am not updating Syllabuses here, but there are essentially the same from year to year.

Parents (and students) who wish to contact me and have access to Google Classroom thaddeus.herman@wcsdny.org will do it.

PLTW StudentsFAQ -"Did I earn the RIT credit?"

Due to the exams being later in the testing week this year, and my immediate plans after the end of the school year, I may not have been able to contact you or your parents directly to inform you that you are eligible for the RIT credit...Don't worry there is still plenty of time.

The RIT PLTW link is http://www.rit.edu/pltw

The simple rules for Eligibility are:

    1) Passing the PLTW John Jay course with an final year end average of 85 or above (since the computer generates the final average for the report card, an 84 will also be acceptable from me...)

    2) A 6, 7, 8, or 9 on the Final PLTW Exam 6=C, 7=B, 8 or 9 =A.  I can only speak for myself, but I put the PLTW score of 1-9 on the report card as the student's final exam score.

So, look at your report card.  If the final average is 84 or above, and the final exam score is 6, 7, 8, or 9, then you are eligible for the credit.

I ALWAYS recommend getting the college credit.  It is $225 for 3 credits.  Community colleges are even much more expensive.  Most students who I have talked to have been able to use the RIT credit they received, much like DCC english or AP's from JJ. DO IT!  Many colleges and universities will allow them as transfer elective credits, at a minimum.

This is a link to the form to fill out and submit to RIT.

     PLTW POE CEA RESULTS!
Great job!  One grade of 9 in each class and TEN grades of 8! Also 60% getting 6 or above, which beats the last two years of 56% and 50%.

    PHYSICS Regents Final Exams- 2016

The results are in!  Most teachers felt their students results were a little lower than expected.  I would agree, but I still found the test very fair.  I predicted an average grade for my students of 77.6 and that actual was 74.9.  That's 2.7 points lower.  It turns out that my juniors average score was only 0.08 points below my predicted, and my seniors were almost 4 points below my predicted average.
Congratulations to students that earn the Herman bonus for doing well above expected: Juniors-Britney Guzman, Stephen LeGare, and Gage Link. And Seniors - Dan Gisolfi, Andrew LoPrete, and Nico Zachman.

FINAL EXAM NOTES FOR JUNE 2015

CEA and POE Results 2015- I may make a "prettier" chart like the ones found below, but for now, a simple graphic to convey how everyone did as a whole.  I was very pleased overall with the results.  The % of students with 6 and above went from about 50% last year to about 58% this year.  And remember, nationally, only about 38% of the students get a 6 or above.

Letters of results went out to everyone, so you should have gotten it already.  If not, then send me an email.

    PHYSICS RESULTS
Okay, the results are in! At first look, they are a strange set of numbers, but overall, not too bad.  The strangest thing is the lack of high scores.  I predicted 8 scores above 85 and there was only one.  I predicted a median score of 79 and it was 78 (close). 16 of 37 tests were in the 4 points of prediction...a touch less than half.  I predicted a mean of 76.9 and it was 74.5...this is the strange part. It is as if someone took the bell shaped curve of grades and squished it from the high side.

However, a very enjoyable year all around.  Two classes, two very different "personalities", one very rewarding year for me.  ENJOY.

I will be monitoring the school tools grade book to see if the results are in.  For those who did well enough above Herman expectations, I should be able to add the offered point bonus to your 4th quarter grade from here.  Just keep an eye on it when your report card comes in.

HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION (2015)
I had the opportunity to go to a NASA sponsored education workshop from Jun 22 -26 at the Wallops Island Launch Center in Virgnia.  I kept my first blog of the activities going on, including the rocket launch on the Thursday.

I also kept a blog of my 3-week summer bike adventure, if you are so inclined to see what teachers (at least this teacher) does outside of class, check out my blog.

POE and CEA Students regarding getting RIT Credit

Rules for being eligible for RIT credit

    1) You must earn an 85 or above average for your four quarter grades

    2) You had to get a 6 or above on Online Test.  6 = C grade, 7= B, 8 or 9 = A.

Finding out if you are eligible:

I will call all eligible students by Friday June 20th.  If I didn't call, then you didn't meet both criteria.  You are free to email me to find out what you did get.

What to do if you are eligible

I strongly urge any student who is eligible to get the RIT credit, to TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! Getting 3 college credits for $200 is cheaper than even the community college. Even with just a C, most students I have talked to over the years have been able to use the RIT credit to fill some requirement (usually free electives) towards their bachelors.

YOU WILL NEED THE REGISTRATION FORM. Go tohttp://www.rit.edu/emcs/pltw/ and snoop around and find the Student/Parent page and the registration form.

You can wait until fall and get a copy from me directly.

    There is time to decide.
The registration deadline is Nov, 2014

    Congratulations!

Test grades are all in!  Results are below.

One last lesson to anyone reading....
10 nanoseconds = 1 x 10^-8 seconds, but the ORDER OF MAGNITUDE of the 10 nanoseconds is -8.  So, since the question asked "What is the ORDER OF MAGNITUDE?"  The only acceptable answers were -8 or 10^-8.  If you said 1 x 10^-8, you did not get the credit.

What is the highest possible grade on a regents exam?....100
What is the order of magnitude of the highest possible grade on a regents exam?....2

100 would not be a correct answer to the second question.

    PLTW Overall Results 2013 and 2014(updated 6/18/14)

The chart below shows the resulting Stanine scores for both CEA and POE.  The green is the expected national distribution of scores and the X's are the scores of the JJ PLTW CEA POE students.  Good Job in being well above the national average!  19 of 35 (54%) earned 6 or more, thus reaching RIT Credit Level.  PLTW expects only 40% to reach this level.  (Remember, RIT Credit is available to students who averaged 85 and above for all 4 quarters AND got a 6 or above on Online Test.)

Overall, the results are a little lower than I would like, but not too bad.  The average was 2.8 points lower than I predicted.
Remember, all the people that did better than I predicted (green column)earned extra points on their 4th quarter grade.

    PHYSICS REGENTS EXAM Results 2014
The physics regents results this year, as a group, were good.  The average score on the test was 76.7  which was higher than the 75.3 that I have predicted. 12 of 23 students were within 4 points of my prediction score, so that is right in line with past results. I was very impressed with my seniors sticking it out to the end.  Thank you.
