Resources may include, but are not limited to:

-
Night, by Elie Weisel
-
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Brandbury
-
Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
-
Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
-
They Called Me Enemy by George Takei
-
Non-fiction Essays from the Bedford Reader
Essential Materials (students will need these every day!):
1. Charged Chromebook
2. Personal Reading Book
3. Strong plastic folder for paper handouts
4. 2 different colored pens + highlighter
5. One stack of 3 in. x 3 in. sticky notes
Homework:I don’t assign homework, but if students don’t complete written assignments in the ample time I give in class, they are expected to finish it at home.
Personal Reading Book: Students should be reading about 20 minutes a night of their personal reading book. They should have this book in their backpack, so it can be utilized at home and in school. I give them 30-45 minutes a week in class to read.
Expectations: Cell phones are not to be used in class. Students put their phones in the cell phone caddy in the front of the room as they walk in. It has helped significantly reduce distractions. Students need to arrive to class before the bell rings, as instruction usually begins immediately after the bell. Students are expected to not talk while I am talking. Students should always have their personal reading book with them.
Grading
I use a point based system that generally follows these guidelines:
-
Classwork (freewrites, reading response questions, exit passes, etc) 5-20 points
-
Big or small slideshow presentations(this is usually related to your personal reading book): 30-60 pts
-
Group projects: 15- 45 pts
-
informal writing responses: 20-30 pts
-
In class essays: rough draft to your final copy: 50-100 pts
