Q: How long does my child have to stay home after having a fever?
A: Your child must be fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
Q: Can my child use crutches in school?
A: Before a student returns to school wearing a cast or using crutches, the parent should obtain a note from the physician stating the diagnosis and that they can use the crutches in school. There should also be a note from the doctor regarding the amount of time your child should be excused from physical education/recess.
Q: What do head lice look like?
A: It is very difficult to see the lice. They move quickly and avoid light. It is easier to visualize the nits or eggs that the louse leaves on the hair shaft. The nits look like little sesame seeds and are grayish/white in color. Nits stick to the hair unlike dandruff that flakes off and hair styling products which are easily removed by sliding your fingernails down the strand of hair. Nits can only be removed by using your fingernails or special combs designed for "nit picking." Nits are usually found in the hair around the ears and the nape of the neck within 1/4" of the scalp.
Q: How do I get rid of Lice?
A: There are many special shampoos on the market to aid in the removal of Lice, but it is important to realize that shampoo is not enough. All bedding and clothes must be washed and dried. Rugs should be vacuumed. Hair brushes should also be cleaned and sanitized (you can throw them into the washing machine and dryer). It is also necessary to physically remove all nits off of the hair as it is possible for them to hatch one week later.
Q: Can my child take medication in school?
A: Students can take medication in school, but only with a doctor's order on file in the Health Office. Over the counter medications including Tylenol, cough drops, and allergy medications are considered medication by NY State law and require a physician's orders. All medication must be brought in to school by an adult. Students are not allowed to carry their medications to school.
Q: In what grades are physicals required?
A: Physicals are mandated by NY State for all new registrants and those students entering grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. They may also be required for students who receive services from the school.
Q: How much should my child's backpack weigh?
A: A general rule is that backpacks should not weigh more than 15% of your child's body weight. If you are concerned that your child's backpack is too heavy, there are a few things you can do. Go through the backpack with your child on a regular basis to help him/her eliminate any items that may not be essential. Wheeled backpacks are an option and may be used at Kinry for the entry and dismissal of school. Instruct your child on the proper wearing of backpack straps. If your child's backpack is manufactured with 2 back straps, the pack should be worn over both shoulders at all times.
