• The American Physical Therapy Association has provided the following suggestions to prevent injury resulting from book bag/backpack use:

    1.  WEAR BOTH STRAPS-
By wearing 2 shoulder straps, the weight of the backpack is more evenly
                 distributed and promotes symmetrical posture.
    2.  The weight of the pack should be no more than 10%- 15% of the child's body weight.
(weight of the back pack divided by the child's weight = % body weight)
                a.  Make sure that your child is only toting necessary items to and from school.
                b.  Wheeled backpacks may be helpful, but keep in mind if your child's classroom
is upstairs, they will need to be able to carry it up and down the stairs.
    3.  The straps of the backpack should be adjusted so that the pack is carried in the
center of the back.  The child should be able to put the pack on and take it off
easily and maintain free movement of both arms.
    4.  Warning signs that your child's backpack is too heavy include:
                a.  a change in posture when wearing the backpack
                b.  struggling when putting on or taking off the pack
                c.  complaining of pain when wearing the pack
                d.  tingling or numbness of the arms or legs  when wearing the pack
                e.  red marks from the straps on the shoulders
    5.  Design features to consider when choosing a backpack:
                a.  padded back
                b.  hip and chest belts
                c.  reflective material
                d.  multiple compartments
