• The Griffin Mural at Van Wyck

gryphonIn 2007, as part of an arts-in-education program and with the financial help of the Parents Association, Student Government and a fund raiser (in which Mr. Shuchat, our principal, had his head shaved by three students), Van Wyck students created a large mosaic mural of the school's mascot, the griffin. The mythical creature with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion was displayed on the Van Wyck family crest.

6th, 7th and 8th grade children cut donated ceramic tiles, stained glass and mirrors under the guidance of Roberta Andersen, an artist from Tivoli, New York. They applied adhesive and carefully fit the pieces onto the wall. The beautiful mural is located in the main lobby of Van Wyck.
