BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH ANNOUNCEMENT
Good morning! This is Mrs. Zehr and I’m here to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month with all of you which starts this Friday October 1st!
Every 2 minutes someone is diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Many of you may know someone close to you who has been affected by this. You walk alongside people every day who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer....I am one of those people. Eight years ago in 2013, on Halloween, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer that was very aggressive. With my cancer diagnosis came weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, losing my hair and having multiple surgeries on my chest. I have been very open about my journey with cancer and continue to share my story, hoping to help others who are struggling with their cancer diagnosis. Many of you may already know someone who has been diagnosed, is a survivor or even lost their fight with cancer, but here at Wappingers junior high, NO ONE fights alone!
Seven years ago when I started Breast Cancer Awareness month at our school, the outpouring of support from the students and all of your teachers kept me positive and helped me get through the toughest time in my life. I even was a guest on The Wendy Williams show in 2014 for their month of October Breast Cancer makeovers that year! Now how many people can say that!? See, always try to find some positives even in your darkest days.
This month you can make a choice to be involved and feel good about making a difference in thousands of lives. I challenge you to wear something pink each day during this month of October to show your support. Items are available for sale, including pink beaded necklaces, pink tie dye rubber bracelets as well as awesome t-shirts. Every Friday in October there will be “PINK OUTS” and prizes will be given to random students I may see around the building who are really pinked out!
During lunch periods every Friday, Mr. PK & Mrs. McGowen and Civility Counts will offer pink lemonade for a donation to help our cause. In addition to helping fight the cause, every Friday in October is “HAT/BANDANA DAY” for a $2 donation. With a $2 donation you will be allowed to wear your hat or bandana during the school day which is normally not allowed. You will be given a piece of tape, ticket or other item that must be visible to show you donated. Please be a positive participant following all PBIS expectations.
All proceeds of your contributions will benefit the local Breast Cancer Charities. Our goal this year is $1,500, so get ready to get crazy with your pink from head to toe and have some fun while making a difference all month long!!
Thank you everyone for your support!!
