• Welcome to the Wappingers Central School District Family & Consumer Sciences Department!

Students at Van Wyck and Wappingers Junior High School take three Family & Consumer Science Courses (Foods, Clothing, and Resource Management) over the course of 7th and 8th grade. These courses help prepare students to meet responsibilities as family members and community members, consumers, home managers, and wage earners. The goal is to educate early adolescents to think constructively, make sound decisions, solve problems, and manage resources. All three of these courses are delivered within a laboratory setting and involve approximately 75 percent hands-on instruction. The use of real-world relevant tasks, laboratory simulations, scenarios, and community involvement is an integral part of the course, as is the use of library research, class discussions, and group activities.

Once students enter high school, they have the opportunity to expand their studies into a variety of pathways: Human Services, Family Studies, Food and Nutrition, and Textile and Design. Our Family and Consumer Science courses meet the needs of the diverse student population, often serving mixed abilities and mixed grade levels in the same room at the same time. The common denominator for our students is their interest in the topics they study.

Throughout high school, students will have an opportunity to progress through a series of electives depending upon their specific area of interest. For more information on the electives offered at our high schools, click here to view the Course Handbook.
