Required Course Text
- We will read from the 10th grade core curriculum, which may include Night, Of Mice and Men, A Raisin in the Sun, or To Kill a Mockingbird.
Course Fees/Supplies
I will supply you with a folder. You will need to bring paper for the binder as well as a blue or black pen each day. While not required, a folder is strongly encouraged to assist you with staying organized.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
- Read, discuss, and analyze a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction texts.
- Write in order to convey ideas as well as discover them.
- Use speaking and listening to convey ideas.
- Use critical thinking to devolp knowledge and skills for life beyond high school.
Grading Policy
Grades will be based on a percentage of possible points available during each quarter. Tests and essays are worth twice as many points as quizzes. Class participation will count as 10% of your quarterly average and includes punctuality and attendance, as well as how you contribute to the positive learning environment of our class. Please be on time! Tardiness reduces the learning opportunities we have and disturbs the lesson. Lunch detentions will be assigned as needed to encourage punctuality.
Late Assignments
The expectation is that you work throughout the period and complete everything in class. While there is no official homework, it is expected that you will do some independent reading at night to improve your reading skills and stamina. If you do not complete your work because you were wasting time, you will be graded on the work you accomplished with no opportunity to complete it later. If you should need additional time, we will work with you the next day to help you get caught up during resource room or class time. All late work loses 10% per day. Please see me if you need help so that we can avoid this problem.
Course Policies
We are all members of an academic community where it is our shared responsibility to cultivate a climate where all students/individuals are valued and where both they and their ideas are treated with respect. Our classroom is a place where students should feel free to take academic risks and feel safe to share their ideas; therefore, disrespect will not be tolerated, even if a student says that he or she is "only kidding."
Wappingers Central School District is committed to advancing the mental health and well-being of its students. If you or someone you know is feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and/or in need of support, services are available. For help or to find additional resources, contact the School Counseling Office.
Academic Integrity Rules
Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else's words, work, ideas and passing them off as your own. Some examples of plagiarism include copying another student's work, copying and pasting information from the internet, using someone else's words but paraphrasing them so that they sound more like you, and not properly citing your sources. If you are not sure if something is plagiarized, see me before the assignment is submitted and we will make the necessary citations. Plagiarism is a serious act of academic dishonesty and results in a zero on the assignment as well as the possibility of a disciplinary referral. We can avoid this by working together.
